US National Moguls Champion Jeremy Cota’s brief visit home

April 9th, 2012 Posted in People, Sugarloaf

WSKI was fortunate to have another extraordinary local athlete as our guest on the Mountain Report during his few days home for the first time in over a year & a half! 2007 Carrabassett Valley Academy graduate Jeremy Cota has had an amazing array of accomplishments as a member of the US Freestyle Ski Team, with this winter’s National title a befitting culmination to an excellent season! He had 12 top 10 finishes including four second place finishes in World Cup events in the 2011- 2012 season.

AND he represents us so well with his guileless down-to-earth attitude & self-effacing style, thnx Jeremy! Like we say at Sugarloaf: no need to brag, just show ‘em on the Hill!

Stub’s slideshow w/ his Narration

April 8th, 2012 Posted in From The Archives, Sugarloaf

Several years ago Stub Taylor compiled some of his slides & we had him do a Voice Over to describe what each photograph was all about! Some need no narration, some are indicative of the rich history of skiing at Sugarloaf with its long-time reputation as the biggest mountain in Maine with the best skiers in New England, & some will make you wonder why we don’t get so much SNOW anymore; but they will all add to the legend that is Sugarloaf Mtn. Reggae Fest is coming!

April 5th, 2012 Posted in Events, Sugarloaf

It’s hard to imagine there’s ever been a time without Sugarloaf’s now world famous Reggae Fest, but as it so happens a mere 24 years ago the festival premiered for the very first time. It could hardly be called a festival back then, but today it’s one of the highlights of the year, an annual event every Sugarloafer looks forward to. And thanks to the return of cold temperatures it looks like we’ll be skiing during the Fest as well, something that seemed downright unthinkable just a week ago! Reggae Fest goes from April 12-15th this year. For those of you who have never been, we’ve included a video of what you’ve been missing. For those of you all too familiar with Reggae Fest, well, enjoy the flashback.  Read More… »

Fly fishing in the morning, skiing in the afternoon!

April 4th, 2012 Posted in Local Activities

It’s hard to argue that it’s been an unusual spring up here in the Western Mountains. What is easy to argue though, is when someone says there isn’t anything to do around here. In fact, the weird weather means you can go fly fishing first thing in the morning, then hit the slopes after lunch! The fly fishing season has officially begun and registered Maine Guide Bob Duport of Western Mountains Fly Fishing stopped in to the studio to discuss the new season and offer some handy tips. Whether you’re an experienced angler or sushi is the closest you’ve come to a live fish, give Bob a call to arrange your own guided expedition. Read More… »

Lookin’ for stuff to do this weekend? Here is our status on outdoor activities and current conditions in the area. First off weather; it’s looking like Saturday will be the pick of the weekend as that’s the day we should see some bright sunshine. Temperatures are still a bit chilly especially after experiencing last week’s record breaking heat. Temps here in Carrabassett Valley should top out in the mid 40′s with overnight lows in the lower to mid 20′s… Read More… »

Way back then, Sugarloaf was already the king of spring & we wrote the book on how to have a great time!!!!!!

The western mountains of Maine are ‘king’ all year round to us who live here; scenery, fun things to do, & friendly people; all would make any Royal glad to be here, too! Read More… »

In 1985, Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s latest crown jewel was the Sugarloaf Golf Course

March 13th, 2012 Posted in From The Archives

The “string of pearls” along the Carrabassett River, & the peaks of Sugarloaf, Bigelow & Crocker Mountains in view throughout the course, promised to make the new Sugarloaf  golf course a champion’s delight right from the start. Jones playing on #8 will no doubt show the on-going improvements to the course as #8 looks different 25 plus years later! Always beautiful, always challenging, & ranked #1 in the State of Maine year after year since its beginning, the opening of the course was an exciting moment when Carrabassett added golf to the choice of actvities available in our region.
