Maine’s Winter Special Olympics

This footage from the 42nd Annual Special Olympics Maine Winter Games in 2011 is a reminder to get cooking for the HUGE Community Supper Sunday night Jan. 29 when more than 500 athletes from 80 Maine communities will gather to compete in the 43rd Annual Special Olympics Maine Winter Games at Sugarloaf on Monday & Tuesday, with a torchlite parade & the biggest Fireworks Display of the year on the 30th. Seth Wescott Signs Autographs at the Board Room

Olympic Gold Medal winner and local hero Seth Wescott popped by the Sugarloaf Board Room on Thursday, December 29th to meet, greet and sign his autograph for some very appreciative skiers and riders. Most of the lifts may have been on wind hold, but that didn’t stop people from braving the gusty and cold conditions to get their chance to say hi to Seth and receive their very own autographed poster.

“Run that Puppy!” The Skyline is Open!

The Skyline Quad, Sugarloaf’s first new lift in 14 years, officially opened for business today! Over 400 people were on hand to commemorate the lift’s  inauguration. The first 100 riders received special “Skyline” t-shirts, not to mention some pretty sweet bragging rights. The Skyline is a fast, fun, and most importantly, wind-resistant addition to the mountain. WSKI was there to capture another great moment in Sugarloaf history. (more…)

BIG Air…Bag!!!

Carrabassett Valley Academy’s Freeride Coach Nate McKenzie gives the low-down on the new 65′ X 65′ air bag to be set up just west of the Super Quad in the old freestyle jump area. This HUGE air bag brings dry-land to new heights, literally, by enabling CVA’s student athletes to practice aerial maneuvers which previously were only able to be done into water at places like Lake Placid’s Olympic site in NY. Sugarloaf Annual Meeting 2011-2012 season

Skyline Lift Towers have been flown into place

The lift towers for the new Skyline Quad are now sitting in their new home along the Spillway trail here at Sugarloaf. It was quite the sight to see as the helicopter made trips back and forth from Lot E to the Spillway trail on the mountain. It was amazing watching the precise manuvering from the heli pilot and the quick work done by the workers on the ground. (more…)

Rt 27 in Carrabassett Valley has been connected

Thanks to Reed and Reed of Woolwich. The bridges on Route 27 are officially open as of 7:54 pm Tuesday night. A LeBretton truck was waiting at the south end to be the first vehicle to cross the bridges. On the way across the north end bridge, he gave a honk of his horns and a wave (more…)

Q & A with Steve Kircher

Steve Kircher, president of Boyne’s eastern operations, held a question and answer session on March 28th. It was held at the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center after Carrabassett Valley’s selectmens meeting. Maine Maple Sunday at Sugarloaf’s Sugarshack

WSKI was lucky enough to get an early morning tour of Sugarloaf’s own Sugarshack on Maine Maple Sunday. Danny Barker walks us through the process, and thanks to Gifford’s, we enjoyed some of Sugarloaf’s own maple syrup atop some tasty vanilla ice cream.  Maine Maple Sunday is a day where the sugarshacks across the state open up their doors to the public to learn about this great pastime. Sugarloaf Banked Slalom 2011

Seth Wescott and Sugarloaf hosted the 1st ever Banked Slalom on the east coast on March 19th. Over 140 riders participated and the weather was perfect! 2002 Olympic Gold Medalist Ross Powers rode the fastest time and took home the Glass Lobster… (more…)

Let the Games begin!

The Special Olympics winter games are held every year right here at Sugarloaf. In fact this was the 41st yr Sugarloaf has hosted the games. As usual, a refreshing actic blast was in the air, but that doesn’t stop the athletes  from giving it their best. Here’s a taste of Monday morning’s snowshoeing qualifires and the opening ceremonies held on the “Beach” in front of the Sugarloaf base lodge. (more…)
