We are grateful to the Foster family for giving WSKI a copy of their home movies from 1964 at Sugarloaf when the hardy skiers worked & played with gusto to create the grand reputation of ’Sugarloaf’ that so many now know & love! This fantastic footage shows so many changes (fashions!!), & yet so many things that haven’t (can you ID the trails??)! ….. the fly over is great!!!…. (more…)

Monday, May 7th, 2012Take a ride back in time with Susan in a Stanley Steamer
Sunday, April 29th, 2012
The Stanley Steamer is one of those special inventions that you fall in love with when you first see (& hear!) one, if you should be so fortunate! This video from WSKI’s Archives by an unknown producer is timeless in its presentation of one of the incredible creations of the brilliant Stanley brothers of Kingfield at the turn of the 18th-19th century. As stated in the mission of the Stanley Museum, where you can see actual Steam Cars (1905, 1909, 1910, 1916), & other inventions including Air-Brush Portraits, Paintings, Violins, Photographs, & more: ‘The Stanley Museum keeps and shares the traditions of Yankee Ingenuity and creativity as exemplified by the Stanley family in order to inspire those values in children and adults’. The Museum commemorates and preserves the heritage of the Stanley family genius, including sister, Chansonetta, whose photographs depicting rural turn-of-the-century American life can also be viewed at 40 School Street, Kingfield. Museum hours: June through October, Tuesday to Sunday 1 to 4 PM; November through May, Tuesday to Friday 1 to 4 PM; or by appointment. www.stanleymuseum.org (more…)
Stub’s slideshow w/ his Narration
Sunday, April 8th, 2012
Several years ago Stub Taylor compiled some of his slides & we had him do a Voice Over to describe what each photograph was all about! Some need no narration, some are indicative of the rich history of skiing at Sugarloaf with its long-time reputation as the biggest mountain in Maine with the best skiers in New England, & some will make you wonder why we don’t get so much SNOW anymore; but they will all add to the legend that is Sugarloaf Mtn. Thank you Brud, for sharing these memories!

Enjoy some classic ski film footage from forty plus years back! This fabulous bit of Sugarloaf marketing from the late ’60s is not exactly GoPro quality, but the essence of Sugarloaf is captured completely, & that’s still the reason why we love this region! Way back then, Sugarloaf was already the king of spring & we wrote the book on how to have a great time!!!!!!
The western mountains of Maine are ‘king’ all year round to us who live here; scenery, fun things to do, & friendly people; all would make any Royal glad to be here, too! (more…)

In 1985, Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s latest crown jewel was the Sugarloaf Golf Course
Tuesday, March 13th, 2012The “string of pearls” along the Carrabassett River, & the peaks of Sugarloaf, Bigelow & Crocker Mountains in view throughout the course, promised to make the new Sugarloaf golf course a champion’s delight right from the start. Jones playing on #8 will no doubt show the on-going improvements to the course as #8 looks different 25 plus years later! Always beautiful, always challenging, & ranked #1 in the State of Maine year after year since its beginning, the opening of the course was an exciting moment when Carrabassett added golf to the choice of actvities available in our region. More from Howard Nielsen’s reports on Boston TV in the 1970s
Thursday, March 1st, 2012Looking back on the sport we love is an interesting deja vu to northern New Englanders whose social fabric & economies are affected by, at the least, & dependent at the most, on the inflow of money & jobs that a healthy ski resort brings to rural mountain communities. This piece from 1976 will have you either chuckling or crying depending on your outlook, as the irony of much of the content over three decades later shows how much has changed, & yet how little. Will we ever learn? You be the judge! (more…)
Howard Nielsen reports on the state of the Ski Industy in the 1970s
Sunday, February 5th, 2012
The more things change, the more they stay the same, especially when it comes to how the ski business is a big factor in the health of the economy of northern New England overall. This report for Boston television in the mid-1970s shows how much the ski biz affects local towns, & their welfare, when downturns in numbers, for whatever the reason, lead to challenges in rural places that rely on good winters & many visitors to make a living from year to year! Four Seasons of Fun: the timelessness of Mountain Life!
Friday, January 27th, 2012
This vintage video is about ten generations from the original 3/4″ video tape Master edit of the mid-1980s, but you still get the idea! Many of the shots could be re-created today right across the western mountains of Maine. Many are of events no longer occurring, but perhaps inspiration to see our Future by re-visiting the Past! We’d love to hear from anyone in this video, please drop us a hello & help us ‘remember when…’ (more…)
Remember when Sugarloaf hosted the World Heavyweight Championships every year?
Wednesday, December 28th, 2011
Our recollection is that this was the podium scene & weigh-in at the 1984 Heavyweight Championships, with local celebrities Brownie & Zappa doing the announcing & weighing. The ‘Big People’ were always a fun crowd to have at the Mountain, & the event got Sugarloaf more publicity, even nationally, than any other event by far, till its demise shortly after this video’s event! Dump Party!
Tuesday, November 8th, 2011
This footage from forty years ago shows the high spirits of the various characters that Sugarloaf has attracted for six decades, at about the time that Carrabassett Valley was becoming incorporated as a Town! Taken at one of the legendary Dump Parties down the Carriage Rd. from the Red Stallion, more than a few of these faces can still be found around the Valley or on the Mtn.! (more…)
Upper Gondola Line from Mid-Station in the ’80s
Thursday, October 27th, 2011
If you remember skiing before there were winch cats & shape skis, you can appreciate how challenging it was to look good on the great bumps that always grew on Upper Go-Go Line! What a blast it was to see Sugarloaf’s many expert skiers handle the VW size, skier-made moguls on a glorious spring day! (more…)
